Battery passport QR codes: the connection explained

Understand data carriers, identifiers, and the digital information behind a scan.

A code is a doorway

A QR code can connect a physical battery to online information. It does not by itself guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or continued availability of that information.

Three distinct questions

What does the code contain?

Document the identifier or address represented by the code. Avoid assuming the entire passport must fit inside the printed symbol.

Where does it resolve?

Test the connection from scan to record. A valid link is useful only if it continues to reach the correct information over time.

What can the visitor access?

Decide how public information and restricted information are handled. Test an ordinary reader’s experience separately from authorized editing access.

A practical pilot checklist

  • Scan the code using more than one device.
  • Confirm that it resolves to the intended record.
  • Check text size, lighting, placement, and physical durability in the intended setting.
  • Test the result after a data update.
  • Document the process for handling broken links or system migration.

These are practical testing suggestions, not a certification protocol. Check current applicable carrier and identifier requirements before production.

Plan ownership of the domain, resolver, and record. Ask what happens if a supplier changes, software is replaced, or a hosting service is discontinued.
